Small Company Gains Big Success Using AMD Opteron Processor-Based Sun Server and Solaris 10
Global System Services Corporation (GSS) is a software and consulting firm helping some of the largest global enterprises such as GE Capital, Motorola and Hearst Corporation to upgrade and maintain their messaging infrastructures. Recently, GSS took a hard look at its own infrastructure, especially its main testing lab where the number of servers created a cooling problem. The company's expanding business required two new quality assurance (QA) environments, potentially adding 12 new systems using the "one application, one server" model. Instead of leasing additional space and purchasing a dozen new servers, GSS chose to consolidate and virtualize its server population. Powered by two Dual-Core AMD Opteron processors, the Sun Fire X4200 server running Solaris 10 OS and VMware proved to be the ideal platform for GSS. This server has taken the place of 10 single-processor systems, a ten-to-one consolidation ratio. GSS no longer needs additional space, and has consequently avoided considerable additional annual costs.
