Energy Wasted/Cost Calculation Details:
- Calculation assumes processors and memory controllers operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year
- Processor and memory controller maximum power specifications obtained from publicly available processor and chipset specifications for the Intel x86 2 socket and 4 socket capable processors (Intel Xeon and Xeon MP processors) that shipped from April 2003 through December 2005 as reported by the IDC Worldwide Quarterly Server Forecaster
- Calculation assumes that IDC reported processors consumed no power until the quarter after they were shipped to account for approximate ramp-up time
- Calculation assumes that all the processors shipped had, and continue to have, uninterrupted operation
- Calculation assumes that 70% of the maximum power specifications for the processor and memory controller were used at all times
- Differential between the energy spent by AMD and Intel's processors and memory controller cooling mechanisms were derived using 60% of Intel's processor's and memory controller's maximum power specifications (@ 70% of maximum power). The power differential is based on publicly available processor and chipset specifications for AMD Opteron™ processor vs. Intel's Xeon and Xeon MP processors.
- Calculation of cost is based on worldwide average of $.13 per kWh based on 2003 and 2004 global average cost of energy as reported by the International Energy Agency
- Incremental increase of theoretical dollars spent over time is based on the assumption that all of the foregoing factors, including processor sales and global average cost of energy, remain constant to the present, thus producing a constant projected rate of increase
The energy wasted/cost calculation is theoretical in nature and is not intended to provide precise figures. Rather, the calculation is intended to provide a theoretical, estimated representation of money spent worldwide by not using AMD Opteron™ processors based on the assumptions set forth above. AMD cannot and does not guarantee that any particular person or business will save money by using the AMD Opteron™ processor given the multitude of variables involved that are unique to each end user.
